  1. A 45-year-old man has been arrested and charged with armed robbery and aggravated assault stemming from an incident that occurred on March 29. The victim was attempting to give money to another individual when the suspect attacked him. When questioned, the suspect denied any involvement, but was found with "a pocket knife and $160 in cash" on his person. The victim had "visible marks on his face, abrasions on his torso and his hoody" appeared to be ripped. (Subscription: The Daily Tribune News)
  2. House Bill 520 sought to make "sweeping mental health reform in Georgia," but it did not pass during the 2023 state legislative session. Parts of the bill were swept into other pieces of legislation. "It did not pass, but it is not dead, it’s simply delayed," says Jeff Breedlove. "We secured some new funding in the budget for peer-led recovery programs, programs that will impact recovery community organizations like The Arena in Cartersville, funding to extend the hours of the CARES warm line beyond 11 p.m., basically move it towards 24 hours." Breedlove also wanted to give credit to "Bartow’s own District 15 State Rep. Matthew Gambill (R, Cartersville) for some of the forward movement." (Subscription: The Daily Tribune News)
  3. Georgia Highlands College Cartersville Campus hosted the Georgia Department of Public Health's annual Teen Maze program last week. The program tackled such topics as teen pregnancy, STIs, vaping, illegal drugs, sexting and driving under the influence. DPH northwest health district's Christa Gilmore says, "They are able to experience life choices and consequences in a safe environment." She adds that the participating experts are " able to really educate the students and really have some deep conversations with them around these risky life choices."
