In Memory: Kansadie Stewart Weems, 75, Former Bartow Teacher of the Year

Weems taught for 30 years in the Bartow County School System and was a member of Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church in Cartersville.

Mrs. Kansadie Stewart Weems, 75, of Cartersville, Georgia passed away on Thursday, April 2, 2015.

Funeral service will be held on Tuesday, April 7, 2015 at 11 a.m. at Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church. Interment will follow in Providence Cemetery. She will lie in state at the church from 10:00 a.m. until the hour of service. The family will receive friends on Monday, April 6, 2015 from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Mack Eppinger and Sons Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Stewart – Weems Endowed Scholarship Fund, Talladega College, 627 West Battle Street, Talladega, AL 35160.

Mrs. Kansadie Stewart Weems was born on June 22, 1939, in Monroe County, Georgia, to the late Mr. Alonzo Stewart and the late Mrs. Zillia Watson Stewart. She was also predeceased by her brothers, Mr. Lindbergh Stewart and Mr. William Mal (Cleo) Stewart; sister, Miss Dorothy Stewart; brothers-in-law, Mr. Joe Frank Weems, Mr. Nathaniel Weems and Mr. Marion Weems; sisters-in-law, Mrs. Lillie Ruth Stewart, Mrs. Julia H. Stewart, Mrs. Juanita S. Stewart, Mrs. Nell Stewart, Mrs. Ann Towns and Mrs. Lucille Weems.

Mrs. Weems excelled in her studies and graduated as salutatorian from Hubbard High School in 1955. She earned her bachelor’s degree in biology from Talladega College in 1959 and her master’s degree in science education from Atlanta University in 1973. She was a member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc.

She married Mr. Albert Thomas Weems on December 24, 1961, in Macon, Georgia. To this union three children were born: Albert II, Kandance and Kimberly.

Mrs. Weems accepted Christ as her savior while attending Antioch Baptist Church in Cabiness (Monroe County), Georgia. Upon moving to Cartersville, Georgia, she transferred her membership to Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church, where she continued her Christian duties.

A highly respected teacher who had profound mastery of her subjects, Mrs. Weems’ teaching interests included courses in anatomy, botany and earth science. She began her career as an educator with the Clarke County and Twiggs County school systems. For thirty years, she taught in the Bartow County School System where she was honored by her peers with the Teacher of the Year Award. Her professional memberships included the National Education Association and the Georgia Association of Educators.

She leaves to cherish her precious memory her husband of fifty-three years, Mr. Albert T. Weems; three loving and devoted children: Mr. Albert T. Weems, II, Acworth, GA; Mrs. Kandance Weems Norris (Ronald), Durham, NC; Dr. Kimberly Weems McClain (Todd), Chapel Hill, NC; three brothers, Mr. Bennie L. Stewart, Willingboro, NJ; Mr. Sidney Stewart, Sr., Philadelphia, PA; Dr. Mac A. Stewart (Tena), Columbus, OH; brother-in-law, Mr. John W. Weems (Hattie Bell), Cleveland, OH; sister-in-law, Mrs. Frankie S. Weems, Carson, CA; aunt, Mrs. Dorothy Mitchell, Atlanta, GA; six grandchildren: Ms., Moria S. Howard, Fairburn, GA; Master Albert T. M. Weems and Miss. Kirsten A. Weems, both of Acworth, GA; Master Ryan A. Norris, Durham, NC; Miss Kristianna A. W. McClain and Miss Arielle S. W. McClain, both of Chapel Hill, NC; as well as nieces, nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.
