Atlanta City Council President Ceasar C. Mitchell Joins Global Law Firm DLA Piper As Senior Counsel

 

The global law firm of DLA Piper, with 3,500 lawyers in nearly 70 offices in Asia, Europe, the Middle East and the United States, has announced that Attorney Ceasar C. Mitchell has joined the firm as Senior Counsel.  Mr. Mitchell, who also currently serves as President of the Atlanta City Council, will concentrate on real estate transactions, commercial financing and public sector transactions for DLA Piper.

As President of the Atlanta City Council, Mr. Mitchell leads the city's legislative branch and automatically assumes the role of Mayor when that position is vacant. Mr. Mitchell also presides over all meetings of the 15-member council, assigns all committees and appoints committee chairs. During his previous eight years on the City Council as a citywide councilmember, Mr. Mitchell chaired the Public Safety/Legal Administration, Community Development and City Utilities Committees and served as a member of the city's five-member Budget Commission, which authorizes the municipality's annual revenue anticipation rate.

Mr. Mitchell is also a former board director of the Atlanta Development Authority, which implements Atlanta's economic development initiatives. During his tenure, Mr. Mitchell brought his legal acumen and economic development experience to bear to conceptualize four of the city's ten Tax Allocation Districts and successfully authored and passed legislation to create them.

Mr. Mitchell is actively involved in a number of civic, legal and community organizations. He is a gubernatorial appointee to the Georgia Commission for Service and Volunteerism and a member of the Board of Visitors for Emory University. Mr. Mitchell is on the advisory board for Hands On Atlanta, where he is a past board chair, and currently serves on the local advisory board for Outward Bound Atlanta.  He was recently appointed to the Board of Directors of the Future Foundation.

Professionally, Mr. Mitchell has served on the board of governors of the National Bar Association and is a former president of the Gate City Bar Association, Atlanta's oldest legal association founded by African-Americans.  In his capacities as a lawyer, elected official and civic leader, Mr. Mitchell has been featured in Georgia Trend magazine's "Top 40 Under 40" and named a "Rising Star" in the Super Lawyers edition of Atlanta magazine. Mr. Mitchell frequently speaks on panels and at seminars and appears regularly on radio, on television and in print media to discuss legal, public policy and community topics and initiatives.

Ceasar is a native Atlantan, and the son of an Atlanta Police Officer and Atlanta Public Schools Teacher. He is a graduate of West Manor Elementary School, Benjamin E. Mays High School and Morehouse College.  Ceasar earned his law degree from the University of Georgia School of Law where he won a national moot court championship in constitutional law.  Ceasar  and his wife, Dr. Tiffany Yarn Mitchell, reside in the Historic West End community.  Ceasar is a member of Cascade United Methodist Church.
