Following a year of planning, the NAACP Atlanta chapter plans aΒ gun buyback initiative at Turner Field onΒ Thursday, Jan. 16 at 9 a.m.
The initiative, which will be held onΒ theΒ Grey Lot at the corner of Ralph David Abernathy Boulevard and Central Avenue, coincides with the message of non-violence of the late Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
King's birthday is Jan. 15. The assassinated civil rights leader would have been 85.
"We are not asking any questions, we just want the guns off the street," said R.L. White, NAACP Atlanta chapter president.
The NAACP is looking for operative guns:
- 22 calibers
- shot guns
- assault weapons
- riffles
The NAACP's goal seeksΒ to get 1,000 guns off the streets.
