Busy Week For a Right-Leaning Community Commentator

Thoughts on some recent news and events

This was a busy week for your trusted, right-leaning independent correspondent, so I thought I would pass on some observations in one blog rather than three or four. Okay, I am a slacker.

The Help

Go see it, pass "Go" collect two tickets and see what civil disobediance really looks like. What I liked about the movie is that it showed that,in at least some cases, the relationships back then were as much symbiotic as they were parasitic. The characters were well drawn out and the acting was superb. Now if only Tyler P. can do stuff like that then maybe more of us would give him respect.

London riots

Protesting bad treatment by the "man" is one thing. Stealing electronics and selling them at one third the price is criminal. Don't mix up London riots by gangs-white and black with Arab Spring protesters who want the "man" off their backs.

School Board Elections

I liked Khatim El. He was the fighter who knew about the sham called Beverly Hall long before the cheating came to light. So I want a fighter on the board. NOT a chamber candidate. You see the chamber candidates got your kids in this mess. So no more chamber-approved candidates. If one of these candidates seems too well funded, run like hell. And if Mayor Reed endorses one, leave them alone. My pick for the job: Dwanda Farmer. She is independent and the fact that most "insiders" do not like her because she is outspoken makes me love her as the choice. So, she is my pick. Go with the one the establishment does not like and your kids may stand a chance. This is the year we elect true outsiders. No more insiders; this is where we can learn something from the Tea Party. Go to Dwanda's website or just call her and give her your help and let the "chamber" know that it's your kids you are concerned about, not whether someone is palatable to them and their beck and call. More on this in a later blog.

OneFest

My good friend Jay Carter ( his parents listened to my show so you know he comes from good stock) is the main promoter behind a concept I can say I wish I thought of: OneFest. It is a msuical festival that brings together white and black people around music and culture. As a New Yorker, it was not until I came to Atlanta that I realized how segregated it was to party down here. In New York, a concert would bring Asians, whites, blacks, Hispanics—all cultures of music-lovers to the event. But here not so much. So OneFest was invented and is celebrating their 2nd year. Great line up includes Pharcyde, Anthony David, Tortured Soul, and more all hosted by Phife Dawg (if you got to ask, then you are not in the target audience). Get tickets to this event and show the "man" that good music is for everyone. It is at Park Tavern on open stage in Piedmont Park August 27th. Take a date, preferably someone from another culture. As Jay said "We wanted to have a music festival that whites, blacks and all races could party and enjoy themselves together as ONE." Sound good to me.

Flashback Concert

Worse one yet. 'Nuff said. However, if you're a single guy, the 40-plus target audience was out and showing everything, I mean everything. C'est la vie.

Republican Debates

If that is what the Republcians have to offer voters, especially independents like myself, then I am in Obama's camp again. They are running so far to the right, I suspect that even if they really believed the stuff they are saying, they are lying because the country would never let them institute half of it. So in effect they are just spewing BS. Hermanator is more and more showing that he is caricature of the Southern black man who believes Charlie's water is colder. I disagree with Obama on some things and I disagree with Herman on some things but never would I disparage either on a national stage. And making a Gospel song online is pure and simple tomfoolery. Also, if you are working for Herman, give him prescription glasses that do not darken in the sun. Every time he does an outdoor interview , he is, in effect, wearing shades. And that is Rule No. 1 when soliciting votes: let me see your eyes. However, Rick Perry scares the bejesus out of me. He can beat Obama and with ACORN out of the mix I fear lower turnout. WE MUST GET PEOPLE TO THE POLLS. However, many who were first time voters, some in their late thirties, forties and fifties who have not seen any change in their lives (bad economy notwithstanding because many of these have been thorugh worse) will not come back out.

Cornel and Tavis

It's just as I predicted. The election of a black man for president renders the poverty pimps useless. However, Al has managed to stay in the game and elevate himself. Very shrewd man, that reverend. The rest are petulant children crying for mommy to bring them some candy.

Interviewing

When interviewing for a job, do not send an e-mail to the company with a link to a story on their terrible quaterly earnings and say that they need to hire you in order to raise earnings. The person receiving the e-mail may be just a little paranoid at that moment.

Wednesday Wind Down

This Wednesday, Aug. 17, Seven and his full band will be playing a tribute to Teddy Pendergrass. He looks like him, sounds like him and his band is tremendous. It's free. It's comfortable. And, It's entertaining. See you there.
