Five Ways to Avoid Gaining Weight this Christmas

The only thing standing between us and the requisite holiday 10 lbs is careful planning and a dollop of will power.

The holidays are officially here and comes with all the trimmings - cakes, cookies, alcohol and merriment. The only thing standing between us and the requisite holiday 10 lbs is careful planning and a dollop of will power. Following these tips will keep you jolly in spirit, but not in stature, right into the New Year.

1. Keep your current workout routine consistent. Consistency is your ally at any time of the year, but it is especially important when the threat of rouge calories is on the horizon.

2. Eat BEFORE you go to the holiday party. If consistency is your ally, hunger is your enemy. You must avoid it at all times. Its sole purpose is to rob you of will power.

3. Shop 'til you drop! The shopping season has its benefits. Even though you may be forced to, park far away from the front door at stores. Walk the mall twice before you go to your intended location. Take the stairs instead of the escalator. Every little bit helps. Just don't, under any circumstances, eat at the mall.

4. Sip. At the holiday party, stay with a one to two drink maximum. Liquid calories are the worst. They sneak up on you when you least expect it.

5. Keep your spirits high! Depression can creep in around the holidays and contribute to emotional eating. Remember that the season is about being appreciative for our many blessings and spreading love to those around us.
