Smoothies the Healthier Way

Are you consuming or have you consumed smoothies, but you are not quite sure if your smoothies are as healthy as they could be?Well, this is the article for you. Here's to healthy reading...

It has come to my attention that there is a false sense of security as it relates
to smoothie consumption and health. Many people are under the assumption they
are making a healthy choice by consuming smoothies. However, in many instances, this simply equates to the consumption of a less fattening, sugar filled milkshake. Now I know that I will get a lot of raised eyebrows over saying this, but I am simply stating the facts.

When I teach workshops or work on-on-one with my consulting clients, I show them how to make healthier smoothies. I love the smoothie concept because it’s a great way to get a lot of good nutrient value quickly and in a cost effective way. Although, I don’t love the fact that thousands of people are consuming smoothies that are actually having a negative impact of their overall health. This is why I would like to take a few moments to share a healthier alternative.

There are several very important components to a healthier smoothie. First off, you want to start with a healthy liquid base (water, coconut water, herbal tea or
almond milk {only use almond milk if weight is not a concern}). The next step
is to add in some fresh and/or frozen vegetables and fruits, preferably organic. I know that I may lose some of you by recommending the addition of vegetables, but this is the best way to get a healthier smoothie. It’s a great rule of thumb to use green vegetables such as spinach, kale or romaine lettuce. The last step is to add in some healthy options that are specific to your needs and preferences (ie. healthy/low sugar protein powder, flaxseed, chia seeds, chlorella, spirulina, plain yogurt, oats and/or ice). Then blend all of the ingredients together and enjoy!

I will admit that if you are used to drinking milkshake-like smoothies, the taste
of these healthier smoothies may take some getting used to, but it will be so
worth it. Feel free to share your smoothie making stories below in the comments
section. I look forward to seeing you around the neighborhood with healthy
smoothies in tow!
