Composer, Musician, Educator, and Pastor Dwight Andrews to Discuss 'Living a Creative Life That Bears Witness to a World of Problems and Promise'

As part of the 2014-2015 Signature Conversations in the Arts Series, on Thursday, Jan. 29, 2015 at 6 p.m., Spelman College will host a conversation with Dwight Andrews, Ph.D., a 2015 Distinguished Visiting Scholar. Dr. Andrews, a composer, musician, educator, and pastor of First Congregational Church in Atlanta, will discuss “Living a Creative Life That Bears Witness to a World of Problems and Promise,” which offers a meditation on his multi-dimensional career.

The conversation will center on the idea “What I Am Learning…” This theme suggests the immediate and ongoing nature of Dr. Andrews’ self-discovery and the dynamic challenges of living a creative life that bears witness to a world of both problems and promise. For the first time, Dr. Andrews will frame his rich and distinct experiences into a single reflection about life, work and what he’s learning.

During his talk, Dr. Andrews, who has performed on over 25 jazz and “new music” recordings, and served as music director for Broadway productions such as Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, The Piano Lesson, and the revival production of A Raisin in the Sun, will present brief excerpts of his work. He will also speak to the folly of making a career plan, and the necessity of discipline, preparation, and a sense of humor to be an effective change agent in the world.
