Effective Immediately: Atlanta Youth Under Curfew

Mayor Reed enforces ordinance to ensure summer safety.

In a joint effort among Chief of Police George Turner, Parks Commissioner George Dusenbury, and Marta CEO Dr. Beverly Scott, Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed announced Tuesday that the city will enforce a curfew for teenagers.

The curfew is part of the Mayor Reed's Summer Safety Initiative, aimed at keeping children safe and curbing any violent or unruly behavior. Under the ordinance, youth 16 and younger may not be outside their homes without adult supervision from 11pm to 6am from Sunday through Thursday. On Fridays and Saturdays the curfew starts at midnight and lasts until 6am.

According to a press release from the Mayor's Office, Marta riders will see more police presence at train stations and on buses. Uniform police officers will also patrol public parks and pools.

“I want everyone in the City of Atlanta, especially our young people, to enjoy the summer months,” Mayor Reed said via press release. “At the same time, it is vital that we keep everyone safe. Our parks, pools and recreation centers are safe havens for kids where drugs and gang activity will not be tolerated.”

Parents are advised to beware and know where their teens are at all times.

Upon the first violation, the teen will receive a warning from police. A second violation, however, may result in a $1,000 fine and 60 days in jail or mandatory community service against the parents.
