President's pastor to preach in West End Atlanta

The irrepressible Dr. Rev. Jeremiah Wright will deliver a
sermon, Sunday July 1, 2012 10:45 am at West Hunter Street Baptist Church, 1040 Ralph David Abernathy Blvd.  Noted as the pastor of President and Mrs. Barack Obama, Rev. Wright will preach at W. Hunter to culminate W. Hunter’s month long Men’s Day Celebration for 2012 themed, “MEN COMMITTED TO SERVE’.

Deemed controversial by the press, Rev. Wright has never shunned or avoided the “race issue” or racisim here in the United States.  Rev. Wright’s past sermons gained national press in 2008, when the then Senator Barack Obama and a member at Rev. Wright’s Trinity United Church of Christ, in Chicago, became a presidential candidate.

Statements like, “American chickens have come home to
roost”, in response to September 11, 2001 attacks and “not God bless America, God damn America”, drew fire from Obama opponents.  However, Rev. Wright has steadfastly defended his record as descriptive rather than divisive.

A recipient of a Rockefeller Fellowship and seven honorary
doctorates, Rev. Wright retired from his day to day duties at TUCC in 2008 after serving 36 years.  During Rev. Wright’s leadership, TUCC grew from 250 members to more than 6.000 members and became
the largest church in the mostly white United Church of Christ denomination.

Doors of W. Hunter open at 9:00 am and services begin at
10:45 am.
