1) NBA Playoffs on Cascade

 Where/When: J.R. Crickets Lounge, 2348 Cascade Road; Applebee’s, 3690 Cascade Road. Game day is Friday and possibly Sunday (TBA). 

The Event: Win or go home, that’s the phrase in the NBA these days. There will be a new NBA Champion as the LA Lakers were swept by the Dallas Mavericks. At the same time, two teams are on the brink of elimination and another two teams are exhausting themselves to advance. The surprise of the Playoffs, Memphis Grizzles and the battle tested OKC Thunder are having a thunderous classic battle that makes basketball exciting to watch at your neighborhood spot.  Please sit back and enjoy your favorite wings, nachos or whatever strikes your hunger and wash it down with an array of drinks while relaxing on Cascade Road at either the new JR Crickets Lounge or Applebee’s.

2) Quilt: Uncommon Threads

Where/When: Southwest Arts Center, 915 New Hope Rd, Friday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The Event:  The Center along with Sewjourners Quilted Guild presents the 8^th Annual Uncommon Threads. This is an exhibit of traditional and contemporary quilted works and will last through May 27^th. Quilts are not only beautiful but they tell a story through the hands and imagery that sown it. This weekend see what stories are being told and there history.

3) Evelyn J. Frazier: One Woman’s Dream

Where/When: Auburn Avenue Research Library, 1^st floor, 101 Auburn Ave., Friday & Saturday, Noon to 6 p.m. and Sunday 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.

The Event: The Research Library brings to life “One Woman’s Dream: The Unfolding Legacy of Evelyn Frazier.” This is an interactive exhibition about businesswoman and owner of Frazier Café Society. Though she was an extraordinary woman who did extraordinary things, the exhibit will focus on her business, civic, educational and political awareness and contributions. This includes but not limited to her part with the National Association of Negro Business and Professional Women’s Clubs, the NAACP, Morris Brown College and Alumni organization and the Republican Party. The wonderful part about this exhibit is that the Evelyn J Frazier’s Papers are a collection at the library and her niece, Pennye G. Hicks is one of the curators of the exhibition. This venue is right outside our patch but the exhibit represnts all of Atlanta and is located in downtown on the corner of Auburn Avenue and Courtland. Please call for directions.

4) Music in the Park

Where/When: Howell Park, 983 Ralph David Abernathy Blvd., Sunday 1p.m. to 9 p.m.

The Event: Atlanta’s historic West End’s own Kebbi Williams with composer Miguel Atwood Ferguson and the City of Atlanta’s Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs presents: Music in the Park. This is a community event that is bringing together an all-star lineup of musical entertainment for all to see and enjoy. Starting around 3, you will hear and gaze upon entertainment from acts such as members of Atlanta Public Schools All City Orchestra, Grammy award winner Chris Dave and Kinah Boto’s Ayah Drummers. Be ready to relax and enjoy the sounds of jazz and entertainment at Howell Park.

5)  A Heavy Grace, A Shallow Home

Where/When: Hammonds House Museum, 503 Peeples Street, Friday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday and Sunday 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

The Event: Daniel Minter was the 2010 Art Auction Merit Award Winner for which the museum is showcasing his work as an art Exhibit. His work is deeply rooted in visual memory and virtual thoughts as he delves into the African and the American Black symbolic past. Through his work and imagery, you will see the African past, the antebellum south, Jim Crow, Civil rights all at a crossroads in time.
