Senior University 2014 Features Documentary Honoring the Legendary Tuskegee Airmen

Harriett G. Darnell Senior Multipurpose Facility honors Older Americans with Documentary Film on the adversities and racial challenges faced by the Black Airmen during World War II


Fulton County seniors were treated to a presentation of the historical documentary video of β€œDouble Victory: The Tuskegee Airmen at War” on Thursday, May 08, 2014, at the Harriett G. Darnell Senior Multipurpose Facility. The documentary tells the actual story of the segregation and racial prejudices endured by the Tuskegee Airmen during World War II.

Historian Zellie Rainey Orr provided facts and commentary regarding the documentary as well as information regarding facts vs. fictionalized events and stories in the movie β€œRed Tails,” which also featured the training and war activities of the Tuskegee Airmen.Β  Orr is a researcher, historian consultant, author and award-winning poet who promotes the history behind β€œunsung heroes.” Orr promoted β€œtangible recognition” of the Airmen through the dedication of Camp Creek Parkway as the β€œTuskegee Airmen Parkway.”  The 12-mile stretch of State Highway ends at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport and is traveled daily by thousands.

The program was co-presented with the Department of Arts & Culture as one of the pre-grand opening celebrations for the Fulton County Aviation Community Cultural Center.Β  The center’s grand opening will be held on Thursday, May 15, 2014 at 3900 Aviation Circle, NW, Atlanta, GA 30336
