Spelman College Museum of Fine Art Hosts Annual Community Day

The Spelman College Museum of Fine Art in partnership with the Spelman College Department of Dance and Drama will host their annual Community Day, an interactive experience of the Brides of Anansi: Fiber and Contemporary Art exhibition on Saturday, Sept. 27, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Brides of Anansi reveals how the exhibition’s featured artists use and manipulate fiber to articulate their perspectives on identity, relationships, history, experiences and artistry. The artists spin, weave, twist, and loop fibers through the ancient lens of Anansi, the Ghanaian folk hero and spider-man who is the central character in countless West African and Caribbean fables, to create an array of colorful and commanding works. The exhibition artists are Xenobia Bailey, Sonya Clark, Januwa Moja, Senga Nengudi, Nnenna Okore, Joyce J. Scott, Adejoke Tugbiyele and Saya Woolfalk. Spelman’s exhibition will introduce several of the artists to a Southeast audience for the first time.

Community Day includes make-and-take workshops, face painting, yoga in the museum, storyteller’s circles, and giveaways donated by the Center for Puppetry Arts, Sweet Blackberry, and Zoo Atlanta.

Community Day is free and open to the public, and will be held in the Spelman College Museum of Fine Arts in the Camille Olivia Hanks Cosby Academic Center located at 350 Spelman Lane S.W., Atlanta, GA 30314 (GPS Address: 440 Westview Drive, S.W. Atlanta, GA 30310).
