Two Arrested Following Barricade; Atlanta Elementary Schools Locked Down, Evacuated

Police have confirmed they have arrested two suspected thieves near Miles Elementary School and Adamsville Primary Elementary School.

An Atlanta area elementary school was placed on lockdown and a second was evacuated while police dealt with two suspects who barricaded themselves in a nearby home.

According to Atlanta Police Department spokesman Greg Lyon, the two suspects were wanted for a snatching theft, and had barricaded themselves inside a home on Bakers Ferry Road and Candlelight Lane. SWAT teams and negotiators responded to the homeΒ in an attempt to induce the pair to surrender. At approximately 4 p.m., they succeeded and the two suspects gave themselves up.

Lyon said that at the suspects were unarmed when they were taken in to custody, but police were searching the house to ensure that no weapons were inside.

Atlanta Public Schools told Patch that all students at Miles Elementary School were evacuated to nearby Adamsville Primary Elementary School, which was then placed on lockdown. The lockdown has been lifted now that the suspects are in custody.

The schools and the home in question are located just southwest of the junction of Interstate 20 westbound and Interstate 285.
