Two Democratic state representatives who represent portions of Cascade and southwest Atlanta oppose a bill requiring welfare recipients to be drug tested before qualifying for government assistance.

β€œSenate Bill 292 attacks the character of people in need,” said state Rep. Roger Bruce, D-Atlanta. β€œThese people in need have done nothing wrong and they should not have their constitutional rights infringed upon to further the political agenda of the majority party. It is important that we stand strong against the passing of SB 292.”

State Rep. Elly Dobbs, D-Atlanta, believes the measure may be unconstitutional.

"I question the constitutionality of the suspicionless drug testing in SB 292,” she said. β€œThis bill will penalize many innocent needy Georgians at times when they need help the most."
