UNCF Atlanta Regional Office Reports Unprecedented $180,000 Gift from Greenville, SC, Long-Time Donor Jerry B. Sherman

Atlanta GA. (September 17, 2015). On August 27, the UNCF Atlanta Regional Office acknowledged the receipt of an unprecedented $175,000 donation in the form of a bequest from Greenville, SC resident and UNCF long-time donor, Mr. Jerry B. Sherman.

The gift was received by the UNCF Atlanta Regional Office in June, however, Mr. Jim Sherman of Los Angeles, California, who serves as the executor of the donor’s estate came to visit and bring an additional $5,000 check Thursday, August 27. Mr. Jim Sherman shared that helping to make sure that his uncle’s last wishes were completed was one of the most important things that he has done in his life. Jim told the Atlanta team that his uncle was raised by a single mother during the depression and recognized that education was one of the keys to his success as an engineer. Mr. Jerry B. Sherman retired to Greenville and took an interest in supporting the community of which he was a part by investing in the education of students who needed financial assistance to get to and through school.

Atlanta Regional Development Director, Ms. Justine Boyd noted, “We need more individuals like Mr. Jerry B. Sherman to invest in UNCF students and schools as part of their planned giving, because there are thousands and thousands of students who would benefit greatly from the investment.”

Mr. Jerry B. Sherman will be honored during the UNCF’s upcoming “A Mind is…” Gala on Friday, March 16, 2016 at the TD Convention Center in Greenville, SC. His nephew, Mr. Jim Sherman plans to be in attendance.
