Bandroomnation.com has chosen Westlake High School to host their 3rd annual dance battle known as the Southeastern Regional Dance Championships (SRDC). This year, ten (10) teams have been selected to compete in an all-star battle of the champions. Westlake's very own dance champions, The Lion's Mane Attraction Dance Team (LMA) are a part of the 2014 competition.
Established in 2010, the LMA mixes the Westlake tradition of a military style drill team, with a modern flair! They perform at football and basketball games-- in addition to 3-4 competitions each year. They are excited to compete for the SRDC title and grand prize. Each member is trained in Ballet and Jazz, and maintains a 3.0 GPA. They are leaders in their communities as well as inside the Westlake walls. Current team members include Miss Westlake 2013-2014, and members of the Ga Youth Commission, Global Youth Commission, 100 Black Men Scholarship program, Math Club, BEE (senior mentor) club, SADD, HOSA, FBLA, Beta Club, Spanish Honors Society, the Westlake Orchestra, Westlake Jazz Band & Concert Band, and National Honors Society. "All our dancers are scholars and great examples of student leaders" says Westlake principal Grant Rivera.
As a part of the Marching Lions Band, they appear in the Magic City classic parade each year, and, this year, performed for the Orlando Blue Battle of the Bands. Their list of state and regional titles includes 2011 BODL 1st place overall champions; and the 2010, 2011 & 2012 1st place awards from UDA Ga State Dance Championships.
Currently, the Mane Attraction was voted the 2013-2014 "Best Overall High School Dance Team" by HBCUdance.com. They hold the Overall first place title for the 2013- 2014 Ga High School State Dance Championships in the dance team AND auxiliary categories. Most recently, they competed at the UDA Ga State Dance Champions 2014-- where they won 1st runner-up in the small varsity hip-hop division and regained the title of state champs by winning 1st place in the small varsity jazz division. They are directed and coached by professional dancer and choreographer Rae Ransom Coleman.
