A therapeutic riding and equine psychotherapy stable in Cumming has been chosen to receive a day of service from local churches, but the stable needs to buy construction supplies in advance of the big day.
Lynn Brecht of Brecht Stables’ passion for equestrian has persisted since she was a child riding horses on her grandparents’ farm in Michigan. Her desire to provide equine therapy to Forsyth’s special needs community comes from her son Dustin, who has Downs Syndrome. In 2007, Brecht quit her full-time job to focus on Dustin and her own dreams of running an equine therapy stable after Dustin suffered a life-threatening bout of pneumonia.

Brecht Stables, and the associated “Dustin’s Place,” offers therapeutic horse riding lessons for young people and adults who have special needs. Brecht Stables also offers western riding lessons for children as young as 4 years old to adult-aged beginning riders.
The farm also sponsors a State Equine Special Olympics team, provides free lessons to special needs horse lovers and military veterans on special days throughout the year, and provides summer camps, one day camps, and onsite field trips. Reservations are required for the free events, but they can be made on the Brecht Stables website.

Brecht tells Patch that she is looking for donations of cash and supplies in the amount of $12,000 so an army of volunteer laborers can modify pasture land, put in run sheds, fence in pastures, construct a small arena, make repairs to the big arena, and add to the existing barn or build a new barn.
Brecht hopes to have all the supplies by March 15, when the stables will receive “One Day of Service.” Nearly 400 members of local churches will donate their entire day to complete all the necessary construction on the farm.
If you would like to donate funds for the project, please follow this link to the Brecht Stables donation page. If you would like to provide the stables with the supplies themselves, Brecht has provided a list of needed items which can be read below.
