Commissioners Consider Changing Setbacks For Alcohol Sales; Public Hearing Next Week

The proposal would remove a section of the county's alcohol ordinance and replace it with more thorough guidelines on setbacks.

The Forsyth County Board of Commissioners is asking for public input on a proposed amendment to the county’s alcohol code which would clarify how far away stores which sell alcohol must be from schools and churches.

The county’s current ordinance only stipulates that, “No license shall be issued for the sale of distilled spirits in or within 100 yards of any church building or within 200 yards of any school building, educational building, school grounds, or college campus.” The amended ordinance would establish the following minimum setbacks:

  • Businesses where alcohol is consumed on the premises: 20 yards
  • Wine and malt beverage package sales businesses: 20 yards
  • Distilled spirits package sales businesses 100 yards for churches, 200 yards for schools

The public hearing for this amendment will be held at the Forsyth County Administration Building in Cumming at 5 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 6. The regular meeting of the Forsyth County Board of Commissioners will begin at 6 p.m.
