Cornerstone Schools are State Winners in the 2017-2018 eCYBERMISSION Competition

Ninth grade students attending Cornerstone Private School of Cumming win both first and second place in the U.S. Army Educational Outreach Program (AEOP) eCYBERMISSION state competition! The U.S. Army’s eCYBERMISSION is in its 16th year. This web-based problem solving STEM competition is open to students in grades six through nine.

The first place team project used carbon dioxide as a transformable energy source. A device was created to represent a rudimentary piston system, in which carbon dioxide was used to create a gradient. Three different straws, with different diameters, were used to blow air into the device. Their hypothesis was that a smaller sized straw would more efficiently produce kinetic energy, because the carbon dioxide is exiting the straw with more force. This could eventually be used on a greater scale, such as inside of a vehicle. “We had a great time practicing teambuilding along with increasing our affinity for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.” - Farnaz Khandaker, Jacob Ruiz, and Angelina Laramie. Each student will receive a $1000 Savings Bond.

The second place team built a fuel cell using everyday items and foods such as yogurt. Students successfully generated more than one volt of electricity. “The project was challenging, interesting, fun, and a great success we hope to pursue later in life.” -Julian Kemp, Logan Cornelison, Ashton Nicholls, and Jonathan Moreira. These students will receive $500 Savings Bonds. Their teacher, Mrs. Michele Miskus, was very excited for her students.
