Drug Summit In Forsyth Set For Monday

Parents and others concerned about what authorities call a drug epidemic are invited to the informational meeting.

CUMMING, GA — Parents and others concerned about drug abuse in the community are invited to attend a drug awareness summit planned for Monday in Cumming.

The Forsyth County Drug Awareness Council is hosting the summit, which begins at 6:30 p.m. Monday at the Forsyth Conference Center on the Lanier Technical College campus.

At the event, Forsyth County Sheriff's Office deputies will give a presentation on what parents need to know about drug abuse. They will have examples of drugs and paraphernalia parents should be on the lookout for and share information about what popular drugs look like, how drug addiction starts, drug statistics for Forsyth County and resources to get help for drug addiction.

Counselor and interventionist Heather R. Hayes will lead a panel discussion on how to watch for drug abuse, common mistakes parents make and how to find an ethical treatment provider. The event's keynote speaker will be Alan Schwartz, author of "A.D.H.D. Nation: The Making Of An American Epidemic."

The summit was organized by county Commissioners Cindy Jones Mills, who has been a driving force behind the drug awareness council and other anti-drug abuse efforts.

The event is free to the public. The conference center is located at 3410 Ronald Reagan Blvd. in Cumming.
