Emory ALS Center Benefits from Successful Golf Fundraiser

Duluth, GA - September 21, 2016 The fourth annual Terance Mathis Celebrity Golf Classic was held Monday at St. Marlo Country Club in Duluth, GA. The former NFL all-star partners with Cure for ALS to host the event benefiting the Emory ALS Center. Golfers, celebrities, sponsors, and volunteers were treated to a beautiful day at the picturesque venue while they raised awareness for ALS and funding for treatments and a cure for the fatal disease.

Celebrity team captains from professional sports and the entertainment industry were paired with golfers in groups of three for a great day on the course. One of the highlights of the day was the Helicopter Ball Drop where Mark Eubanks won the $500 prize. The stories and messages from guest speakers, Becky Kidd and Shawn & Kathy Sexton, were emotional and uplifting. Each spoke of their lives before and after the ALS diagnosis, and exhibit positive attitudes in the midst of challenge life circumstances.

ALS is a neuromuscular disease that attacks the brain and spinal cord. It takes away the ability to move, speak, swallow, and ultimately breathe, and the average life span after diagnosis is 2 to 5 years.

All proceeds from the event benefit the Emory ALS Center in Atlanta where they not only study ALS in labs but also treat patients, providing the best care in the Southeast. This combination enables clinician-researchers to gain a better understanding of the disease and gives patients the opportunity to participate in clinical trials and cutting-edge treatments.
