Feds Subpoena Documents in Cumming Insurance Scandal

The city must turn over more than two dozen documents to a federal grand jury by next Tuesday.

The federal government wants to get a look at documents pertaining to the City of Cumming and its extension of city employee health insurance benefits to two people who are not city employees.

According to CBS Atlanta, the U.S. Attorney’s office has subpoenaed the city’s Human Resources department for city documents which relate to Angela Mullinax, the longtime girlfriend of Mayor H. Ford Gravitt, who has been receiving taxpayer-funded health coverage since 2005.

A grand jury also wants to examine whether or not City Attorney Dana Miles, another non-employee, should be receiving similar taxpayer-funded benefits; Miles claims there is an oral agreement between himself and the city which supports the arrangement, reports CBS.

Documents relating to Gravitt, including his personnel file and property records, are also being subpoenaed, CBS says.

Meanwhile, the City of Cumming is awaiting a legal opinion from the Georgia Attorney General before it continues with impeachment proceedings against Councilman Rupert Sexton, who is alleged to have leaked private information about city employees on social media; Sexton claims the impeachment is revenge for him discovering that Mullinax is receiving city benefits without being a city employee.
