Forsyth County Property Tax Rate Remains The Same

County commissioners held the line on millage rate on Thursday, but rising property values may still mean bigger tax bills for some.

CUMMING, GA — Forsyth County commissioners held the line on property tax rates Thursday, voting to keep the same rate for the coming year.

Following three public hearings, the board of commissioners voted to again approve a millage rate of 8.036 mills to fund its 2017 budget.

The millage rate is the amount per $1,000 that is used to calculate taxes on a property's taxable value. A higher rate means higher taxes and a lower rate means lower ones.

Forsyth's property tax rate is one of the lowest in metro Atlanta.

But an unchanged millage rate is no guarantee that property tax bills will stay the same. If a home's assessed value increases, the property owner will pay more in taxes even with an unchanged millage rate.

Property taxes will fund the majority of the county's 2017 general fund budget, fire district and bond payments.

Forsyth County staff, its finance committee and the board of commissioners are working now to prepare the county's 2017 budget, which is set to be adopted in November.
