ICYMI: Forsyth Man Forced To Remove American Flags By HOA

Stacy Campbell says his homeowner's association in Olde Atlanta Club threatened to fine him $50 a day for each of six small flags.

CUMMING, GA -- A Forsyth County man says he was forced to quit displaying American flags in front of his house by his homeowners association.

Stacy Campbell told WSB-TV that the Olde Atlanta Club HOA threatened to fine him $300 a day for displaying six small flags in flower pots on his front porch.

"It's not like I’m putting a pink pig in my front yard," Campbell said. "This is just an American flag."

Campbell, whose home is full of red, white and blue American decorations, told the station his family has a history of military service, including his son, who currently serves in the U.S. Coast Guard.

But when he put up his porch decorations this month, he said he got a letter from the homeowners association saying he'd be fined $50 a day for each little flag if he didn't take them down.

One of the subdivision's bylaws says that a single American flag "is allowed to be hung in front of the house from a pole that is physically attached to the house."

WSB reported that the homeowners association did not return its calls for comment.

Campbell said he hopes the HOA board will ease up on enforcement of the bylaws, at least for Memorial Day weekend. He said he's been told he can make his case before the board at its next meeting -- in July.

"Just a little bit of common sense, I think, would be a lot easier," Campbell said.
