Forsyth Schools Has Decided If Students Will Return In-Person

CUMMING, GA — Forsyth County Schools joins the growing list of metro Atlanta schools that are not returning to face-to-face instruction this week.

The district released a statement on Monday stating that, "to assess our ability to staff schools and transport students, Forsyth County Schools will have virtual learning days for all students on Thursday and Friday, Jan. 6-7."

"We plan to resume face-to-face instruction on Monday, Jan. 10 if we have adequate staff coverage," the statement said. "A final decision for Monday will be made by the close of business on Friday, Jan. 7."

Tuesday, Jan. 4 and Wednesday, Jan. 5 are professional development days, so a student holiday.

All staff will report to work beginning Tuesday, Jan. 4. Staff and students who have tested positive for COVID-19 or were symptomatic on or after Friday, Dec. 31, need to contact their school or supervisor no later than the close of business on Wednesday, Jan. 5, the district said.

By the close of business on Tuesday, Jan. 4, schools will post details for Thursday and Friday virtual learning and other operations, such as mid-term makeups and athletics/activities, on their school websites. Learning will be asynchronous. Students may pick up devices at their schools on Wednesday, Jan. 5.

"FCS firmly believes that the best way to educate students is through face-to-face instruction," the statement said. "However, we understand and respect that some parents/guardians selected virtual instruction for their children this semester. Because staff and student schedules were created based on face-to-face and virtual enrollment, these selections may not be changed."

When Forsyth County students return for face-to-face instruction, the district will be reverting to the same operational procedures from August.

• Symptomatic individuals must stay home.
• Masks are strongly recommended.
• Only essential visitors are permitted.

Additionally, the district said it continues to encourage all to social distance when feasible, wash hands often, cover up coughs and sneezes, and keep work areas clean.
