Lake Lanier Crash: Four Bodies Now Found

Speed is believed to have been a factor in the crash of the 38-foot speedboat on Friday.

Cumming, GA — The search for victims of a Lake Lanier boat crash ended early Sunday, when the bodies of the final two victims of the crash were found.

Georgia Department of Natural Resources rangers found the bodies of two male victims just after midnight Sunday. They were Arthur Gene McMahan, Jr., 46, of Mount Washington, Kentucky, and Anthony Reece, Jr. 44, of Columbia, Kentucky.

The victims are believed to have been killed when their speedboat overturned on Friday.

DNR officials say the 38-foot boat appears to have hit a wake and overturned. Speed may have been a contributing factor, they say, but how prominent a role it played remained unclear Monday.

The crash happened just west of Cocktail Cove and the Lake Lanier Islands Resort. Officials believe the four victims were in town for the popular Pirates of Lanier Charity Poker Run.

DNR law enforcement's Critical Incident Reconstruction Team is investigating the exact cause of the accident. The investigation is expected to take several weeks.
