High School Baseball Gets Underway in Forsyth County

With baseball season just underway, Cumming Patch looked at five Forsyth County high school teams while highlighting current achievements and projecting upcoming expectations.

LAMBERT LONGHORNS
Head Coach: Jamie Corr
Record: 3-2
2010 Record: 17-9
Seniors: 9
Scholarships: 3. Nick Buimi (Washington & Lee), Jake Kennedy (Berry) and Keith Grabowski (Calhoun Community College).
Expectations: In his second year as head coach, Jamie Corr has his entire team returning from last year. The Longhorns finished second in the Region in 2010 with a first round loss to Carrolton in the state playoffs. “We hope to make it back to the state playoffs after qualifying in 2010, despite not having a senior class,” Corr said. 

SOUTH FORSYTH WAR EAGLES
Head Coach: Russ Bayer
Record: 2-2
2010 Record: 18-10
Seniors: 5
Scholarships: 1. Jaesung Hwang (Lipscomb).
Expectations: Coach Bayer took the War Eagles to the state championship in 2009 and despite a 2-2 start he hopes to make his team contenders again. “We are a very young and talented team,” he said. Bayer said he will rely heavily on his pitching staff this year to carry the team into the postseason.

WEST FORSYTH WOLVERINES
Head Coach: Byron Orr
Record: 2-5
2010 Record: 14-11
Seniors: 6
Scholarships: 1. Will Candy (Gardner Webb).
Expectations: In his fourth year as head coach, Byron hopes to improve on the team’s 14-11 mark from last season by being competitive in a tough Region 6-AAAAA.

NORTH FORSYTH RAIDERS
Head Coach: Jim Cahill
Record: 3-1
2010 Record: 13-13
Seniors: 12
Captains: Tyler Slaton, Tyler Riddle, Caleb Gore
Scholarships: 3. Tyler Slaton (Clemson), Caleb Gore (Georgia State), Alex Joplin (Georgia College).
Expectations: Entering his ninth year as head coach, Coach Cahill and the Raiders enter the extremely tough Region 6-AAAAA this year. With 12 seniors on the team, Cahill is optimistic they will be competitive and he hopes to make a run at the playoffs in 2011.

FORSYTH CENTRAL BULLDOGS
Head Coach: Kevin McCollum
Record: 3-2
2010 Record: 15-13
Seniors: 3
Expectations: In his third year at Forsyth Central, Kevin McCollum hopes to take the Bulldogs back to the playoffs after first round exit to Hillgrove last year. Forsyth Central finished third in the Region last year and McCollum said “If we are consistent on the mound, in the field and at the plate then we should be able to compete in a new tough baseball region.”
