Horse Rescue Needs a Barn for its Dwarf Horses

Save the Horses kicks off its campaign to house miniature horses on Giving Tuesday.

CUMMING, Georgia (December 1, 2015) - Save the Horses based in Cumming, GA has a problem. The horse rescue is home to eleven rescued miniature horses with dwarfism that currently do not have shelter. Dwarfism is genetic defect defined as the underdevelopment of the body characterized by abnormally short stature often with underdeveloped limbs and other defects.

The Rescue kicked off a campaign today on Giving Tuesday to raise $10,000 to build a special barn for these animals.

The Director, Cheryl Flanagan explains, “These are not your typical miniature horses, they are dwarfs. Just like humans can be dwarfed, so can miniature horses.

They are considered ‘Special Needs’ animals and can not be shown or used for work assistant animals unless there is very little dwarfism characteristic in the horse. They are very special little horses that have different individual needs. We do not know the life expectancy because of their unique abnormalities. We do not adopt out our dwarfs so we know they will never be bred to reproduce these deformities.

The Rescue has already collected more than $1,000 and plans to run the giving campaign through to the end of the year.

“Any amount will make a difference. We are so thankful for the support we get from the community to help with all of our animals.” says Cheryl.
