How to Decorate With Leather Furniture

When it comes to home décor, large leather items such as chairs, sofas, and ottomans can be comfortable, yet difficult to design around.  Reminiscent of a bachelor pad or coffee house, too much bulky leather upholstery can make your space appear a bit plain and dark; however, with the right mix of unique and colorful items, your room can be brightened in no time.

1.) OPT FOR RICH PAINTED WALLS:  Intense hues—even darker ones such as peacock blue—tend to enhance and lift dark leather.  Feel free to add colorful pictures to the walls in an effort to add bring even more spice into the room.

2.) UTILIZE YOUR CABINETRY:  If you have an abundance of dark bookcases or cabinetry in the room, to avoid having your space feel like a 1940’s library, you might want to consider slicking them with a bit of paint that matches the walls.  However, if this is too bold for your liking, you might want to consider only painting the interior shelves.

3.) USE BLACK, GRAY, & TEXTURE:  When it comes to our wardrobe, we’re often told that we shouldn’t mix black and brown; however, shades of gray, black, and white make great partners for brown leather sofas.  To stop things from appearing so neutral, bring in items which have a bit of texture or shine—i.e. reflective furniture, mirrors, or plush throws.

4.) PLAY WITH THE RUSTIC TONES:  Leather couches are often something we’d find in a beautiful log cabin, so feel free to play up the rustic nature inherent in hide-covered furniture.  Opt for things like woodsy side tables, a deep-hued natural fiber rug, and burlap or canvas pillows.

5.) LIGHTEN UP:  If lightening is your goal, then focus on making your leather sofa or chair the focal point, while utilizing soft, warm neutrals such as ivory, cream, sand, and beige for the rest of the room.  Paint the walls a traditional white and go with a pale, natural-fiber rug.

6.) IT’S ALL ABOUT THE PILLOWS:  The wonderful thing about dark leather is that virtually any type or color of throw pillow will work.  If you find yourself getting bored easily, feel free to change your pillows with the seasons.  Crisp blues and greens are perfect for spring, while warm cinnamon, cranberry and persimmon fit beautifully in the fall and winter.
