How to Manage a Quick Move

So you’ve just sold your home.  Clearly, packing up and moving takes time and it’s generally something that most people allot 7-8 weeks for completion; however, whether you’ve found yourself accommodating a quick job change or the new homeowners want a speedy move-in, last-minute transitions can be common.

With this, quick moves tend to require even quicker packing, which means having a plan in place can help you when the amount of things you need to accomplish seems monumental.

1.) LISTEN TO YOUR INNER MINIMALIST:  For pack-rats, letting go can be a challenge, but last-minute moves require a certain ruthlessness which will help you make decisions about what really needs to go with you.  Plain and simple, the more you get rid of, the less you have to pack and ultimately move.  While you may think it’s a good idea to just throw everything in boxes and worry about the sorting aspect later, you will actually save yourself a lot of time and future headaches if you simply commit to up-front organization.

2.) SORT IN THREE’S: Instead of haphazardly pulling things out of closets and rummaging through cabinets, layout your plan so each room is taken care of before moving onto the next.  Begin by separating your belongings into three piles—1.) Keep, 2.) Donate, 3.) Toss.  If you haven’t used it in a year (or more), get rid of it!  If you find yourself hesitating, odds are good that you should probably get rid of it as well!

3.) DON’T GO IT ALONE: While many of us tend to feel bad asking for help, remember that your friends and family are there for a reason, and there’s nothing wrong with practicing a bit of reciprocity.  Remember when you helped with last year’s garage sale or deck build?  Go ahead and ask for a return favor; however, before you do, make sure you know what you need assistance with.

From there, if your monetary means allow, don’t be afraid to utilize a professional packing service or a pick-up company who can get rid of any unwanted junk.  While they may be a bit expensive, the cost can be worth the amount you save in stress and headaches.

4.) GET SUPPLIES:  Although this step may seem somewhat self-explanatory, don’t forget moving supplies!  Generally speaking, used boxes can save you a lot of money; however, they can be difficult to find.  Places to look include liquor stores, super markets, and your local recycling facility, but if you’re short on time, boxes and other packing necessities can be purchased through home improvement stores such as Home Depot or Lowes.  There is even an option for purchasing recycled boxes—check out Georgia Green Box.

5.) GET PACKING!:  Once your plan is laid out and you’ve procured the necessary help and supplies, it’s time to start packing those “keep” piles.  Your new start awaits, so get the bubble wrap and packing tape ready—it’s moving time!
