How to Remedy a Small Closet

When it comes to purchasing a home or placing one on the market, small closets can be frustrating for both buyers and sellers.  With limited space, especially in older homes, it can be a challenge to fit your belongings into cramped, unorganized closets.  Generally speaking, physically changing the size or shape of your closets may not be feasible, especially if you’re not looking to take down a wall or two; however, when it comes to creating a functional area that’s perfect for storing your belongings, there are other tricks that can help your closets appear more spacious.

To begin, make sure a thorough cleaning is at the top of your list.  You’ll never be able to tell how much space you’re dealing with if your closet is stuffed to the max with clothes, shoes, and other miscellaneous storage items.

Tap into your inner minimalist and make a point to remove all unwanted items or things you haven’t worn or used in five years—two if you’re really looking to start fresh.  Think about what you actually want and need, and set aside things that qualify for either the trash or Goodwill.

Once you’ve settled upon the items that are staying, break out that measuring tape and gather some dimensions.  While this may not seem like the most important thing in the world, it will allow you to purchase or build shelving which will properly fit your closet and allow you to make the most out of your space.

Once it’s installed, organize the items you want to place back into the closet and sort them in a way which will allow you to make them look neat and eventually find them with ease.  At the end of the day, shelving, boxes and closet systems help make the most of limited closet spaces in a way that makes them appear larger.

For some extra oomph, it’s even wise to consider removing the closet door.  In short, doors tend to give spaces a somewhat closed-off feeling, which is something you’ll want to avoid if your goal is to make a small closet appear more spacious.  However, if you find yourself in a situation that won’t allow you to actually remove the door, make a point to use it to your advantage instead.  If you’re looking for more storage opportunities, purchase a hanging shoe rack; or if you’re simply hoping for an opportunity to assess your outfit in the morning, consider hanging a full-length mirror on the door, which will also help the closet look bigger.

From there, consider revamping your closet lighting.  Dim lights can make things appear small and cramped, while a few extra fixtures will help the space appear brighter and roomier.

In the end, small closets may not make or break a housing deal; however, they remain one of those areas which often help buyers feel comfortable in your home.  If your things are organized and neat in a way that saves space, many house hunters will overlook the fact that actual size may be an issue.

To gain a better understanding of what needs to be done, speak with a real estate agent to make sure you’re utilizing your closets in a way that buyers will respond to.  Most potential homeowners are seeking houses with ample storage space, so making sure you’re ahead of the game when it comes to closet organization can make a great deal of difference.
