Hurricane Irma: Forsyth School System Makes Decision About Classes

CUMMING, GA -- The Forsyth County School System has announced it will cancel classes and keep its offices closed on Tuesday, Sept. 12 due to the inclement weather Tropical Storm Irma is dumping onto the Peach State.

The system, which cancelled classes for Monday, is requiring its employees to report to work at 10 a.m. Tuesday "if it is safe to travel," according to its website. The Forsyth County Board of Education will also go ahead with plans to hold its meeting at 4 p.m. as scheduled.

Irma, which was downgraded to a tropical storm early Monday morning, is now dumping rain and high winds onto metro Atlanta and north Georgia. The National Weather Service is warning residents to expect increased winds and rain to blanket the area as well as North and Central Georgia throughout the day and well into the evening.

Wind gusts ranging from 45 to 65 mph are possible across most of the area, as are widespread power outages and downed trees, "which could be blown onto power lines, road, structures and vehicles," the agency added in its noon briefing.

Anywhere between 2 and 6 inches of rain could fall around metro Atlanta over the next 24 to 48 hours, meaning a chance of flooding in most urbanized areas, NWS said.
