A group of top-class business students at a local university is giving back to its community by volunteering at an organization which provides assistance to Forsyth County’s needy families.

The Cottrell Scholars, a group of business students at the University of North Georgia, has partnered with Meals by Grace, a nonprofit which provides meals to less fortunate residents of the county. The university says that the Cottrell Scholars began helping Meals by Grace by packaging the food for delivery, but have begun planning to expand their involvement by offering personal financial advice to the families Meals by Grace serves.

The scholars are also using their business skills to help Meals by Grace break the cycle of poverty in Forsyth County, the university said. In the future, Cottrell Scholars may serve internships at Meals by Grace to gain valuable working experience and to give back to those in need.

According to figures quoted by the university, the number of people living below the poverty line in Forsyth County in 2011 was 14,400, higher than the state’s per-county average.
