Market Your Home on a Rainy Day

More often than not, Georgia weather seems to oscillate between extremes of saturating rain or dusty drought.  When it comes to putting a house on the market, most of us would prefer weather which helps our homes look their very best; however, Mother Nature doesn’t always seem to cooperate.

When it comes to planning a large grouping of showings, most real estate agents will naturally pay attention to the forecast, but unexpected bad weather can’t always be helped.  If you’re in a bind and need to sell your home soon, it’s essential to know your options when cloudy skies show signs of raining on your parade.

For starters, it’s important to consult with your Realtor because they know better than anyone whether it’s worth it to go ahead with your showings as planned or whether you should hold off for another day.  With this, if they give the go-ahead, it’s important to remember that there truly are benefits to all kinds of weather.  While we all love blue skies and sunshine, low-hanging clouds and drizzle have a way of making people long for the warm comforts of home—and if you play your cards right, YOUR home.

To start, leave the lights on.  Well-lit homes sell great in any weather, but it’s even more important when things are less-than-inviting outside.  Make a point to utilize color adjusted LED or halogen lights inside, while keeping the landscape lighting on outdoors.

From there, keep it warm.  While we all know how toasty it can be here in Georgia during the summer months, you still don’t want to freeze your guests.  A comfortable, bright house is inviting and will be a welcome treat on a dreary day.

With this, don’t be afraid to put in a bit of extra work on your windows and blinds.  When the weather is dark, dirty windows can not only make the home seem ill-maintained, but it can hinder the flow of natural light.  At the end of the day, light from outside can make a huge difference to potential buyers and you’ll want to play into that propensity as much as possible.  The right window treatments can truly emphasize a great home and help minimize a fair one.

Additionally, make a point to open your windows and let some fresh air circulate.  Yes, this might not be an option if it’s really raining out; however, circulating air can help get rid of odors from smokers, muddy rugs, or pets.  If you can, pay attention to the weather leading up to a showing and allow air to flow through as much as possible.

Before your guests arrive, utilize the weather by setting a cozy mood.  If it’s dark or chilly, set the gas fireplace on low and softly play calming background music.  Again, rainy days have a way of making people yearn for home and the goal of any open house is to help potential buyers picture their life in your house.  If you can make them glad that they ventured out to experience your home, then you’re on the right track!
