Mildewed Drink Nozzles, Utensils In Stagnant Water: Cumming Sushi Restaurant Inspection

The Cumming restaurant got a failing grade of 59/U on its health inspection Monday.

CUMMING, GA — A sushi restaurant in Forsyth County failed its health inspection on Monday, with mildew on drink nozzles and utensils being stored in stagnant water just some of the problems cited.

Maki Sushi, at The Shops at Rosewood at 5925 Atlanta Hwy., scored a 57/U on the inspection.

Among the problems that inspectors cited was an employee handling raw shrimp with gloved hands, then handling prepared sushi without changing gloves. Dirty utensils and containers were being stored in hand-washing sinks and an employee was seen rinsing out a dirty towel in a sink meant for hand washing.

Raw eggs and meats were being stored above, and next too, ready-to-eat food in the cooler. Soda machine nozzles were coated in a "mildew-like substance" and dining room tables were not being cleaned properly.

Imitation crab was being represented as real crab on the menu, raw sushi was being improperly stored to cool and a utensil used to store rice was being stored in stagnant water.

Single-use containers were being reused for food storage and a vent hood had an accumulation of grease and dirt on it.

The failing inspection was a steep fall for Maki Sushi. On its last inspection, in October, the restaurant had scored a 99/A.

According to state regulations, the restaurant will be inspected again within the next 10 days. If the problems are not fixed, inspectors could shut the restaurant down until the issues are addressed.
