North GA To Use $6.8M Of CARES Act Funding For Students

The University of North Georgia will use $6.8 million from the federal Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security to aid students.

DAHLONEGA, GA — The University of North Georgia will use $6.8 million it receives as part of the federal Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act to directly assist eligible students who are facing financial challenges due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

“We understand how stressful and challenging this global crisis continues to be for our students and their families,” said University of North Georgia President Bonita Jacobs. “We hope that the funds the University of North Georgia is providing through the CARES Act and other resources will help reduce the burdens faced by our students.”

Eligible students will receive automatic grants of $100 to $500. The funds began being disbursed to student accounts Tuesday. Students who are facing specific hardships may apply for up to $700 in additional assistance through the University of North Georgia CARES Emergency Grant. The funds may be used for COVID-19-related expenses and disruptions as allowable under the stipulations of the federal CARES Act (i.e., housing, utilities, food, technology, books, supplies, transportation, gas, and insurance). Similar grants will also be available to eligible students who continue their enrollment into summer semester.
