Pinecrest Academy, a PreK3 through 12th grade Catholic School in Cumming, Georgia, has received a $5,000 grant from the Catholic Foundation of North Georgia, during the Spring 2014 grant cycle, intended to help implement the Energy in the Environment and Robotics module as part of the expansion of STEM programming for Pinecrest’s Middle School students.
This generous grant will allow Pinecrest to offer two additional modules to its Middle School program, an additional 135 Middle School students will benefit from the roll out of these important technology-based programs, and the funding will also underwrite teacher training for two faculty members.
The following modules will be added to Pinecrest’s STEM curriculum:

6th Grade -- Energy and the Environment
Students are challenged to think big and toward the future as they explore sustainable solutions to our energy needs and investigate the impact of energy on our lives and the world. They design and model alternative energy sources and evaluate options for reducing energy consumption.
7th Grade – Robotics
Robotics allows students to design, program and build robots. They gain an understanding of this important technology, as well as experience real world applications through robotics competitions. One of Pinecrest’s Middle School science teachers will implement the module and advise a Robotics Club, open to all students.

Pinecrest Academy is committed to serving its students with meaningful Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) curriculum. Acknowledging the need for students to develop the skills needed to lead in the global marketplace, the school has implemented the nationally recognized curriculum developed by Project Lead the Way (PLTW).
Launched in the Middle and High Schools during the 2013-2014 school year, Pinecrest plans to introduce PLTW Launch, Project Lead the Way’s program for kindergarten through fifth grade students, in the Lower School for the 2014-2015 school year.
The Catholic Foundation of North Georgia is a long-time supporter of Pinecrest Academy. The Foundation has provided support for capital improvements, technology upgrades and unrestricted support over the school’s twenty year history, both through general funds and the Conrads Family Foundation.
