Sawnee-Cumming Optimist Club Recognizes Student Of The Year
The Sawnee-Cumming Optimist Club honored West Forsyth High School Senior Alayna Daws as the 2019 Optimist Star Student.

CUMMING, GA —The Sawnee-Cumming Optimist Club honored Alayna Daws as the 2019 Optimist Star Student, the club’s version of student of the year. She is a senior at West Forsyth High School.
With an unweighted 4.0 GPA, and weighted 4.29, Daws has been the recipient of numerous
awards and honors. Among them, she was in the Governor’s Honors Program, a published author
in the GHP Scientific Journal, a member of the National Honor Society, National Science Honor
Society (president), Mu Alpha Theta Math Honor Society, Beta Club, and she was an advanced
placement student. She was one of the four winners of the 2019 Forsyth County Oratorical
Competition and progressed to the district level where she placed second.
A believer in volunteering, Daws is active in the community and her church. She volunteered in
the Special Olympics, a community-based instruction chaperone of handicapped students, the
Tim Tebow Foundation Night to Shine, and was a Vickery Creek Middle School viper academy
tutor. She was the recipient of the Forsyth County Schools award for success at the Georgia
Science and Engineering Fair. At her church, Daws has been a confirmation leader, youth
advisory board member, youth ministry committee member, and an Upward Sports assistant
coach.

Following graduation from West High School, Daws will attend the University of Georgia. She
will begin her studies in a science curriculum.
"Alayna is an inspiring young lady and a model of optimism, perseverance, and dedication,"
Brenda Basey, Sawnee-Cumming Optimist Club president said in a release. "She is very well-
rounded and a giver of her time and talents. She is the epitome of a star student.”
