State Route 20 Improvements Would Widen 24 Miles

An open house on the project is set for Tuesday in Cumming.

CUMMING, GA — Proposed improvements to State Route 20 would widen about 24 miles of the busy east-west corridor from Cumming to Canton.

The Georgia Department of Transportation will hold an open house to share information on the project Tuesday from 5-7 p.m. at Otwell Middle School, located at 605 Tribble Gap Road in Cumming.

DOT officials also will be open to public input on the project, which would widen the highway along its current route.

Various proposals for handling traffic on Hwy. 20 have been floated for the past several years, but none have yet made it to the execution phase. The first efforts began in 2007.

"State Route 20 has exceeded its capacity and multiple improvements are needed to improve mobility and enhance safety from I-575 in Cherokee County to Ga. 400 in Forsyth County," said Katie Strickland, a spokeswoman for the Department of Transportation's District 1.
