Terance Mathis Topgolf Party & Tournament Furthers ALS Research
5th Annual Event Continues to Grow and Raise Awareness and Funding
The fifth annual Terance Mathis Celebrity Golf Classic was held Monday, September 18, 2017 at St. Marlo Country Club in Duluth, GA. The former NFL all-star partners with Cure for ALS to host the event benefiting the Emory ALS Center each year, and this year a pairings party was held the night before at Topgolf Alpharetta.
The Topgolf event began with a moving video about the Emory ALS Center and special words from honoree and guest speaker, Kerry Goode. Kerry is a former University of Alabama and NFL player who also coached in the NFL for several years. He has been living with ALS since August 2015 and receives his care from the Emory ALS Center. A silent auction was held and attendees took their swing at the golf bays after dinner. The evening was sponsored by the Goode Foundation and Choices To You.
On Monday, golfers, celebrities, sponsors, and volunteers were treated to a beautiful day at the picturesque St. Marlo Country Club course. Celebrity team captains from the NFL, MLB, other sports and the entertainment industry were paired with golfers in groups of three. A Helicopter Ball Drop was held just prior to the shotgun start; Bryan Kidd was the lucky winner of the $500 prize. Dr. Jonathan Glass, Director of the Emory ALS Center, spoke at the awards ceremony. He shared that this event, which continues to grow each year is helping to figure out what causes ALS and what the targets are – so researchers will then know how to reach those targets and stop the disease.
ALS is a neuromuscular disease that attacks the brain and spinal cord. It takes away the ability to move, speak, swallow, and ultimately breathe, and the average life span after diagnosis is 2 to 5 years.

The team at the Emory ALS Center in Atlanta not only studies ALS in the laboratory but also treat patients, providing the best care in the Southeast. This combination enables clinician-researchers to gain a better understanding of the disease and gives patients the opportunity to participate in clinical trials and cutting-edge treatments.
