Together, We Can Save the Lives of Willing Servants

Save the Horses appeals to the public to help save the lives of large draft mules in danger of being sent to slaughter

Save the Horses recently rescued three large mules that were on their way to be slaughtered in Lancaster, PA. These mules are in need of medical care and require funds to help with veterinarian costs. Also, three more mules face a similar fate and the rescue wants to transport them to their 50-acre farm in Cumming, GA where they will be safe.

Mules used for farm work are no longer needed once they are lame, sick or too tired to work

Cheryl Flanagan has run Save the Horses, a non-profit 501(c)(3) rescue since 1998 and is used to desperate calls for help for horses and other animals in distress. But the call last week really tore at her heart strings. She received a message about a mule in Pennsylvania that was lame and was being sent to slaughter because it was no longer of use. “Apparently the Amish farmer who owned him, used him up, every muscle and bone, and was now getting the last few dollars out of the mule from a kill buyer who buys horses to be slaughtered for dog food or meat for those countries that eat horse meat.” Says Cheryl.

Cheryl took one look at the photo and she could see the pain in the mule’s eyes and immediately decided that somehow she had to rescue him. While reading the details about the mule, Cheryl saw a post about another mule in the same area in similar distress so she decided to purchase both of them. “Some call it ransom or bail.” Says Cheryl. “Either way, there is profit to the seller.”

While waiting for the transport documents for the two mules, Cheryl learned of yet another one (mule #3) that was also in bad condition – lame, swollen leg, scratches, etc. By the time that transport arrived and loaded the three large horses, Cheryl was notified about three more mules that will face an uncertain future unless the rescue intervenes.

The initial three draft mules have arrived at the rescue and are now being cared for by the rescue’s army of volunteers. Critical funds are now needed to pay for the medical care of the current mules and also to arrange for transport of the other three from Lancaster to Cumming, GA.

“This is why I don't like to even look at those types of online posts anymore. Says Cheryl. It’s too heartbreaking and so much soul searching on how it can be done. Lancaster is 1300 miles away from where we are in Cumming, GA. Transport costs are high.”

GoFundMe to Save the Lancaster Mules

The costs are mounting for the three precious souls that Save the Horses has rescued as there are lameness issues, pain management, veterinarian and farrier visits to check their feet, special diet and supplements to bring them back to good health. “Plus we have to arrange for transport for the other three.” Says Cheryl. “We'll see what the number 4, 5 and 6 come in with. But they will be cared for and treated kindly here.” SavetheHorses.org is an all-volunteer non-profit. They receive no state or federal funds and rely on the generosity of the public for donations to operate.

“If anyone would like to help by adopting, sponsoring or fostering a mule, or if you have pasture we could use, please let us know. If you can contribute any amount via our GoFundMe campaign at the link below, it will surely help. We can do this. We are rescue!" Says Cheryl.
