Two Forsyth Intersections Getting Honorary Names

Hammond's Crossing and Coal Mountain Intersection will be dedicated in the next couple of weeks.

CUMMING, GA -- Two Forsyth County intersections will be getting honorary names, courtesy of the county commission, state legislature and Department of Transportation.

The intersection of Highway 306 and Highway 369 will be named Hammond’s Crossing and the intersection of Highway 9 and Highway 369 will be named Coal Mountain Intersection, the county announced Wednesday.

Hammond's Crossing has long been an economic hub in north Forsyth County. The first general store was built there around 1897 by William Henry Hammond.

"This philanthropic family also gives back to the community through their establishment of the Thomas Hammond High School Fishing Club Fund, which provides scholarships to new fishing clubs," the county said in a news release.

The naming of the intersection was approved by the General Assembly via Senate Resolution 952.

A dedication ceremony for Hammond’s Crossing will be held Wednesday, May 4, at 2 p.m. at Hammond’s Fishing Center at 4255 Brown’s Bridge Road. The public is invited to attend.

References to the Coal Mountain area can be found as far back as the 1870 Census.

Just north of Cumming, the area is home to Coal Mountain Baptist Church, established in 1886, and Coal Mountain Elementary School.

The crossroads has been a hub of commerce for more than 200 years. Through the years, the area has been home to a general store, Wofford Hatchery, Martin's Store, Coal Mountain Building Supply, Thomas Lumber Company and the office of Dr. William Bottoms.

The intersection was named via Senate Resolution 953.

A dedication ceremony for Coal Mountain Intersection will be held Friday, May 6, at 2 p.m. at Coal Mountain Baptist Church, located on the southeast corner of the intersection of Highways 9 and 369.
