UPDATE: Two-Hour Delay Friday for Forsyth County Schools

There will be no extension, students are to report to school two hours later this morning, per Jennifer Caracciolo, FCS spokesperson.

As of 3 a.m., the Georgia DOT says that there have been limited reports of isolated icing on a few north Georgia roads. Crews responded and spot treated as needed. Limited personnel will remain on duty to respond to any developments.

Forsyth County Schools will have a two-hour delayed start on Friday, Jan. 18, according to an e-mail from Jennifer Caracciolo, FCS spokesperson.

Buses will run with a two-hour delay pick-up schedule. All staff, unless otherwise directed by their department director, will report two hours past their original start time.

Lunch will be served to students. All after school programs and activities/athletics will proceed as scheduled on Thursday, Jan. 17 and Friday, Jan. 18.

The following school start times are for Jan. 18:

Elementary School I:    9:40 a.m.

Elementary School II:  10:20 a.m.

High School:     10:25 a.m.

Middle School:  11 a.m.

Caracciolo noted that this delay could be extended into school closure once conditions are reviewed Friday morning. This decision will be made no later than Friday by 7:30 a.m.  

Meanwhile, the Georgia Department of Transportation continues to urge motorists to use “an ounce of prevention" mindset before traveling on Friday.

"We are continuously monitoring current weather conditions as winter weather is predicted for Northeast Georgia overnight," said Bayne Smith, Georgia DOT district engineer for Northeast Georgia. "Before you head out on the roads tomorrow please check the weather and road conditions."

Potential hazardous situations during winter weather include:

• Bridges as black ice forms there first and can reform quickly

• Highest elevations or gaps in North Central and Northeast Georgia

• Fallen trees, root systems are weak because of the drought and heavy rains, with the potential of strong winds trees will likely fall onto or adjacent to roadways

• Traffic signals not operating because of power outages

• High profile vehicles will be difficult to control in high winds
