A UPS driver is allegedly under investigation following accusations that he handed an Atlanta man a makeshift noose during a delivery.

According to WSB-TV, David Mitchell said there was tension with the white UPS driver since they first interacted a month prior to allegedly being handed the noose. Mitchell said part of his job is receiving packages, and the driver has acted strangely since they met.

“He refused to give me the package to deliver and I said, ‘I work here,’” Mitchell told WSB-TV.

Mitchell said the driver shoved packages into his chest before fashioning the noose out of packaging material.

“I go pick up and this is what he made in front of me and handed to me. Signifying a noose. A makeshift noose,” Mitchell said to the news station.

WSB-TV reports that UPS has reassigned the driver to a different route, and the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office has a detective investigating the incident as a hate crime.

UPS has not released the driver’s name, but released a statement:

“It is under investigation, and we are taking this very seriously. We have met with the customer, and there is nothing more to share since it’s still being investigated.”

Mitchell said he wants to see a harsher punishment and fears retaliation, since the driver knows where he works.
