Theaters with both chains will be showing the film through Thursday.

Directed by Albert Magnoli, "Purple Rain" is a very loosely autobiographical story in which Prince plays "The Kid," a young musician struggling to make a name for himself while battling family and relationship issues.

It won the Academy Award for Best Original Score, but was also dinged with a pair of Razzie nominations: Worst New Star for Appolonia Kotero and Worst Original Song for "Sex Shooter."

Criticisms aside, the movie's musical performances, including a blistering rendition of its title track, have made it a cult classic and favorite of Prince fans through the years.
