Winter Driving Policy

Hope everyone stays safe out there in this weather! Here are a few tips if you have to make it out on the road.

We hope everyone has a very safe weekend with all of the snow and ice that is hitting Atlanta right now. We wanted to offer some quick safety tips in you're considering braving the roadways:

Prepare Your Vehicle: As the temperatures drop, consider it a good time to stock your vehicle with a winter driving “insurance” kit. This will ensure that you have everything you need to survive the winter weather should you need to leave the house.

Watching the Weather: If you simply must travel when weather is poor, monitor the roads and check local news stations, internet traffic, and weather sites. Never check your phone while driving.

Driving for Weather Conditions: Before you drive off, take a few seconds and clear off the snow or ice from your windshield, mirrors, lights, reflectors, hood, roof and trunk.

Remember that speed limits are set based on perfect weather conditions, and you should plan on driving below the speed limit in inclement weather. Reducing your speed and increasing your following distance can greatly reduce accidents. Be especially cautious on overpasses and bridges as they are often the first areas to become icy.

Breaking Down or Getting Stuck:

Keep in mind that even the most experienced drivers can get stuck in winter weather. Should the car get stuck, and if it is safely out of the way of other motorists, wait in the car for help. You can run the car’s heather for 10 minutes every hour to stay warm so long as your exhaust pipe is clear of snow. If the snow blocks the pipe, you may be in danger of carbon monoxide poisoning. Open your window slightly to prevent any build up.

Keep your auto insurance agent’s information in your cell phone (if you have an umbrella policy, this could be the same as your home insurance). Or if they have a mobile app, be sure to download it before leaving the house. You never know when you will need to call your auto insurance.
