Winter Weather Predicted to Blast Forsyth on Wednesday

The major winter storm could bring snow, ice to Cumming and surrounding areas.

CUMMING, GA -- The southern end of a major winter storm is expected to blow through Forsyth County on Wednesday, bringing up to an inch of snow and freezing rain.

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for much of north Georgia, lasting from 4 a.m. Wednesday until 1 a.m. Thursday.

In Cumming, the wintry blast was expected Tuesday morning to bring up to an inch of snow and 1/10th of an inch of ice. Forecasters say that forecast is subject to change.

Forecasters are monitoring what could become a major winter storm hitting the region. It is expected to wallop the northeast the hardest, with as much as 1 to 2 feet of snow predicted for northwest of Interstate 95.

In Forsyth County, lows are expected to drop to 22 degrees Tuesday night. Wednesday’s high is expected to be around 40, with a slight chance of snow, freezing rain and sleet in the morning.

The afternoon is expected to bring a chance of rain and snow between noon and 1 p.m., then a 50% chance of rain in the afternoon. The rain is predicted to continue through Wednesday night, when temperatures will dip to around 33 and a chance of snow will return.

Showers are forecast to continue Thursday and Friday and, while daytime temperature will make it up into the mid-40s those days, there remains a 30% chance of snow Friday night.

Residents are urged to use caution when traveling in icy conditions and to take other precautions to avoid exposure to the elements during the advisory.
