Citizen: 'I Don't Feel Safe in My Home'

A Dacula woman wants the city to take measures to prevent trespassing and other illegal activity at the new maintenance facility off West Drowning Creek Road. 

Nanette Klinect, who lives on Majestic Circle, says the new facility has created "a massive safety issue" for her and her neighbors. According to Klinect, the paved drive and the well-lit facility are attracting trespassers.

"There is nothing to keep them from just going back there. They cannot be seen. They can just walk right through our backyards," Klinect said.

During the March 7 Dacula City Council meeting, Klinect asked the city to consider installing an 8-foot high privacy fence along the buffer to curtail the activity. She also asked that "no trespassing" signs be posted.

Klinect recounted what she described as a "terrifying" incident from 2012 in which shots were fired near her house (see video). 

"I don't feel safe in my home," she explained. 

Klinect said she has called 911 frequently to report suspicious activity and wants the city to take action.

"It is a huge safety concern," she insisted.

Councilman Hubert Wells suggested the city install security cameras at the facility. City Administrator Jim Osborn said that "no trespassing" signs could be posted.

"If you give us a little time, we will find a way to address these issues," Wells assured her.

In other business, the Dacula City Council:

• Appointed Joey Murphy to the newly created position of Assistant City Administrator for Development and appointed Kay Partain to the newly created position of Director of Financial Services and Elections. The Assistant City Administrator for Development position has a starting salary of $53,000. The starting salary for the Director of Financial Services and Elections position is $43,000.
• Authorized the city to advertise for construction bids for road improvements in the Whisper Woods subdivision and on Eastside Drive. The project would include the reclamation, resurfacing or replacement of parts of Whisper Way, Whisper Court and Eastside Drive.
• Accepted an annexation application from the Nation of Christ Church for a 5.64-acre piece of property at the corner of Harbins and Ace McMillan Road. 
• Authorized the city to begin survey and design work for the widening of Tanner Road from 18' to 24' from Harbins Road to Franklin Drive. The project was originally slated to be funded through a grant, but, due to the wait involved, will now be funded through SPLOST.
• Tabled a resolution to submit an application for a community development block grant (CDBG). The grant will be used for road work on Hill Circle instead of Tanner Road as originally planned.
