Controversial Commissioner Walks Out Of Heated NAACP Meeting

Tommy Hunter, who called U.S. Rep. John Lewis a "racist pig," left as the meeting devolved into a shouting match.

LAWRENCEVILLE, GA — A meeting with the Gwinnett County NAACP went sideways quickly Tuesday for county Commissioner Tommy Hunter, whose controversial online comments have led to calls for his resignation.

Hunter, who last month called civil rights icon and U.S. Rep. John Lewis a "racist pig" on Facebook, left about 30 minutes into what had been scheduled as an hour-long meeting, the Gwinnett Daily Post reported.

The meeting had been billed as an opportunity for NAACP members and the general public to ask questions of Hunter, who also called Democrats "idiots" and "Demonrats" in a series of posts on his private Facebook page.

But frustrations grew as it began with a series of pre-submitted questions from local NAACP President Marlyn Tillman. Some in the crowd began shouting at both Hunter and Tillman.

In his opening remarks, Hunter said, "It hurts that we’re in a situation now where some people feel they’ve been — I don’t know what the word is — slighted maybe."

As disruptions continued, Hunter was escorted out of the meeting by his spokesman, Seth Weathers.
